本剧改编自AdamKay的同名日记式回忆录《绝对笑喷之弃业医生日志》(简中书译名)，BenWhishaw饰演一个虚构版本的Adam。Adam是一名妇产科病房的医生，在医院等级制度中举步维艰——他的职位低到得忍受折磨人的工作时长，但又高到得面对接二连三的可怕职责。Adam每周工作97小时，需要做出各种生死抉择，而他清楚就连医院停车收费表的收入都比自己高。面对工作中越来越大的压力，他依靠自己的个人生活来度过一切。故事从一个实习医生的视角出发，讲述医院病房里未加掩饰的真实故事，描绘了令人振奋、充满欢笑的高潮，也展现了令人痛苦的低谷。
